The Song of the Garaloon

The sea reversed
(The waves departing from the land
White horses swimming out to sea)
But left upon the sand
A smooth grey stone with lines and veins
Which spoke of time
And looked like death
Yet as I looked it's solid form
Relaxed and slowly took a breath
The trunk unfurled and then the tail
With grace and ease a wing-like sail
Lifted mass into the sky
And circling round like bird on wing
A song with mournful tones did sing
That told of dreams and hopes and fears
Wrapped up in rock for many years

The voice was like a voice unheard
The sounds made not a single word
But touched your heart and made you weep
And understand it was not sleep
Had tied the Garaloon to land
Wrapped up in rock and placed on sand

A dark deep spell, black words once sworn
But now a Garaloon reborn
Adrift within this future place
All family lost in time and space

It's wordless song became more clear
Yet still most odd to human ear
But I, a child could taste the air
The sweet, sweet joy and sour despair
The more it flew, the less like stone
It seemed to take on skin and bone
No longer was it grey or blue
At times a rippling rainbow hue

And as I watched a sun shone bright
A rainbow scattered into light
Nothing was there left to see
An empty sky, a beach and me

But sure as there's a sun and moon
I'm sure I saw a Garaloon
And heard a song that made me weep
That even now sings when I sleep
